As I sat there with a coffee in hand, listening to Alex talk about what she has been planning for her wedding day at the Coronado Cays Yacht Club, I knew that it must’ve been fate that brought us together. In actuality, it was her amazing planner (and friend) Amber–who played a key role in our fateful meeting. The more Alex spoke to me about her story with Tyler, the more amazed I became; everything they had gone through in order to get to their special day was just incredible!
Love at first sight really does exist–Alex and Tyler knew that they were made for each other as soon as they locked eyes. They met while Tyler was traveling for work and it didn’t take long for Alex to move out to San Diego to be with him. Shortly before enduring their 2nd deployment together, on December 24th, 2012, Alex and Tyler said their “I do’s” in an intimate and private setting. It was only six months after they vowed to be there for each other in sickness and in health that they found out how quickly their vows would be tested.
While Tyler was still deployed, Alex was diagnosed with Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Cancer, and MEN-Type1. After a life changing surgery for Alex called a Whipple, they would be faced with their hardest year yet. They had to postpone their big wedding, putting it on hold for the foreseeable future. Alex was faced with a new life and forced to learn how to function all over again; she had to have additional surgeries and a 3rd tumor-removal, all while Tyler was deployed for the third time. As if going through all this wasn’t enough, Alex and Tyler were faced with the tragedy of loosing family and friends, being forced to grieve without each other.
What still amazes me to this day is how positive Alex was and continues to be. She’s said:
“We have had our fair share of heartache and hard times. We were away from each other more than we were together, but we were always too stubborn to let go of each other… four years ago we never knew that our hardest years were quick to follow, but we never gave up. Faith and grace. Grit and strength. Love and forgiveness. And now, here we are… we MADE IT! Healthier, happier, and so excited of the future together.”
It goes without saying that everyone was super excited to finally celebrate Alex and Tyler! After all the adversity and challenges they’d faced, this wedding was finally going to be their big celebration–their big “we did it”. Everything about it was very meaningful and emotional; being surrounded by all of their family and friends made it easy to see how very loved they both are. Alex’s dad gave a beautiful, heartfelt speech about his only daughter and it was clear just how proud he is of her, and of the both of them. The room was full of love and everyone present was beaming with joy for Alex and Tyler.
It was truly a beautiful day of celebration–they deserved nothing but the best, which is exactly what they got! They had their ceremony at Sacred Heart Church in Coronado. Their reception was at the Coronado Cays Yacht club and Amber did a wonderful job planning the whole thing and it turned out to be spectacular. The band they chose was The Mighty Untouchables and they didn’t disappoint either; the songs they played matched their amazing energy and they kept the celebration going strong. It goes without saying that the location was just the perfect touch; being surrounded by water at the Coronado Cays Yacht Club made for the most beautiful place to celebrate Alex and Tyler’s journey.
I was so truly honored to be there for Alex and Tyler and to capture such a meaningful day in their story. These pictures should give you a preview of how amazing their day was!
